All Good Things Must End
We’ve settled into our airport hotel for the night in Amsterdam. We drove a lot today, traversed parts of five countries, two of which we’ve never been to before today. We fly back tomorrow: 11am flight, not too early. We will be making a two-night stop in LA to visit a dear friend who happens to be visiting from New Orleans before we head home. 🤗

Today was another high mileage day. We left Baden Baden, Germany this morning after a nice breakfast at our hotel. The fastest drive to Amsterdam is about 7 hours, but we had the opportunity to visit, albeit briefly, two countries we’ve never been before. So … it took us a little longer, but it was worth it!
Not long after leaving Baden Baden we entered France. We were in the far north east corner of the country for about 100 miles. There wasn’t much to see except rolling farmland (which was actually beautiful!!) on that part of the drive. We were headed for the small country of Luxembourg. After some quick research, we decided to stop at a small town to visit a General Patten museum, and then to take the free public train into the capital city. As luck would have it, today is a national holiday in Luxembourg. The museum was closed and the small town was shut down tight. We decided to cut our losses and continue on our journey. But we did drive through the rest of Luxembourg to the northwest and it was quite beautiful.
Our next stop was Liege, Belgium … no joke … to have a waffle. We drove right into the old city center, parked under the cathedral, and walked right to one of the internet’s recommended waffle spots. It was good and we needed a stop; the coffee didn’t hurt at all either.
After coffee, a Belgian waffle, and a little people watching in the very busy old city center… we were back on the road and headed for Schiphol Airport (Amsterdam) and the same airport hotel in which we stayed at the beginning of our trip. It was smooth sailing and we arrived and checked in, returned a rental car, and came back to the hotel to have… You guessed it… A beer and a little food.
Oh, by the way, while we were in Liege we decided to buy some pastries. Belgium is very much like France… and there were several bakeries right around the square where we had our waffle. It was way too tempting… we bought four different pastries… we got to practice our French with the salesperson… please don’t judge us… we may or may not eat all of them tonight. 🤪
