Arrived Safe and Sound

Just after our last post we boarded our flight from SF to Amsterdam. After about 10 hours, two meals and a snack, several movies, and an attempt at dozing in the sitting position we landed, cleared customs, and were greeted by our welcoming committee: Cecelia. 





After a few minutes of hugs and hellos the girls hopped on a shuttle to check into a hotel. They will be on their own until Sunday when we rejoin them. We heard they rested for a while and then explored the city a little. 



Once they were off we had a cup of good Dutch coffee and headed to pick up our rental car. We drove two hours to the north, to a city named Groningan, where our friend Liesbeth lives. Liesbeth is graciously hosting us for a couple nights. 

After a little chit chat and catching up with Liesbeth we got down to business … cocktails and hors d’oeuvres. She had a great sampling of sausages, and cheese, and spread that one can’t really get in the U.S. Lekker (Delicious)!



Liesbeth prepared a nice dinner of soup and quiche … and then we hit the sack. A nine hour leap ahead with little or no sleep for more that 24 hours does interesting things to the human brain.  Experience has taught us to stay awake as long as possible and jump right into the new time zone. We are looking forward to a fun day with Liesbeth tomorrow.

A “Heel Gezellig” Day

While much of this trip will be Germany, it has started in the Netherlands … and it has been HEEL GEZELLIG so far. Liesbeth’s hospitality has been second to none. We slept fairly well and woke to a delicious breakfast of cheese, sausage, bread, jam, and yogurt; Liesbeth spoils us. šŸ˜ After a leisurely morning we headed back in time: we visited an historic village called Bourtange. And we were very lucky, or as the Dutch say, “Wij vielen met onze kont in de boter” (we fell with our butts in the butter), because this weekend there were historical re-enactments of 17th century battles. It was so much more than we had hoped for. We also had a very typical Dutch sandwich for lunch, kroketten with mustard on white bread. Lekker! In the afternoon we headed into the city center of Groningan. It’s a city of about 200,000 people, one fourth of whom are university students. It really has a college town feel. Boating and Biking on the Rhine

We slept in a little bit today. We’ve been going kind of hard each day and one of us mentioned that we need to start taking it just a little bit easier. Anyway, after a much-needed lie-in, we walked down into the center of the village and got some information about renting bicycles and taking a river cruise. After a little bit of deliberation we decided that the best bet would be to rent bicycles here, take a River cruise north from here to a town called Saint Goar, and ride the bicycles back. It was only about a 10 mile journey up and 10 mile bike ride back. There are a couple of towns between here and the town that we sailed to. We saw a few castles along the way as well.  When we got to Saint Goar, we looked around a little bit and had lunch. Then we meandered down the bicycle road back towards Bacharach and stopped at the towns in between. When we got back to Bacharach we had a little bit of time to take a rest: a German siesta.
