Pinocchio’s Village

As we mentioned yesterday, the setting for Disney’s Pinocchio was inspired by Rothenburg ob der Tauber. We have had a full day here today. We got a good start and made it into town for the opening of the town Museum. While not as big, of course, as the Rijks in Amsterdam, it has an impressive display of artifacts from many time periods. Weaponry from the Middle Ages through the 19th century seems to be plentiful in the museums we’ve been to. This museum had artifacts from the Stone Age … yes … 100,000 years ago. It was definitely a good stop.

We were then in need of coffee and cake … emphasis on need. We took a break to refuel.

With our sugar and caffeine levels high, we did a little shopping. Rothenburg o.d.T. is interesting in that it attracts lots of tourists but somehow keeps the charm of a less visited town. We meandered the shops looking for souvenirs; it’s a great place to find a variety of German trinkets.

It was then on to the Museum of Crime and Punishment, a nod to everything from Medieval torture devices to more modern forms of justice in Germany’s history.  It was a fun stop.

We are really feeling tired today. We decided to take a break for a few hours back at the campground. We actually napped for a couple hours. It is a really nice place to stay. We have an exceptionally nice room with fridge, stove, and sink. We have to use the campground’s shared bathroom/shower facilities, but we assure you, they are the best campground facilities you may have ever experienced. We know we said that about the Wisconsin State Park system’s campgrounds last summer, but this place has all of those beat!

After our nap we headed back to town. We took a meandering stroll through an antique store and a few more streets we hadn’t traversed yet and then had dinner at a Rick Steves’ recommended restaurant. It was phenomenal. We had an appetizer, two beers each — please don’t judge, salads, and entrees … all for €50.  Rick Steves never lets us down.

After dinner we had to try another Rick Steves must-do … we took the Night Watchman’s Tour of the city. A little funny and very informative … anything on the rest of our trip has a high standard to live up to. We loved Rothenburg ob der Tauber!

Softball update:
Emma’s team played their final game last night. Of the four games they played on this trip, they only lost one. Of course this was more of a “good will” and tour trip, but it is fun that the team did well. They had all day free in Amsterdam today and will fly home tomorrow.

Note:
We follow Rick Steves advice for most everything we are doing. When we don’t, it’s not always that great.  He’s never let us down.
